The Hawaii Air National Guard’s 199th Fighter Squadron and the Active duty Air Forces’ 19th Fighter Squadron have achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC) status.

The IOC announcement comes at the end of a three-day exercise that clearly demonstrates the units’ ability to fly and maintain the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft for any contingency operations.

The F-22 is capable of both air-to-air, as well as air-to-ground combat and is the Air Force’s Primary air superiority fighter providing unmatched capabilities for air supremacy and homeland defense.

Art Sale to Benefit Hawaii Island Humane Society

On Saturday, November 24, 2012, High Fire Hawaii, the art gallery & studio at 114 Kamehameha Avenue on Hilo’s Bayfront, is having a one-day sale on its gallery prints, paintings, jewelry and ceramics, and all sales will benefit the Hawaii Island Humane Society. Representatives from the HIHS will be conducting on-site pet adoptions.

Deals include everything from ceramic studio seconds, some student ceramics – both functional and sculptural items – to gallery prints, paintings and jewelry. There will also be specially created animal- and Christmas-themed items. “We’ll have things like pet bowls for food and water, ceramic Christmas ornaments that are animal-related, like bones, and also Hawaiian-themed ones, like palm trees and pineapples, to hang on the tree,” said gallery co-owner Shannon Hickey.

“We’re hoping we have something to appeal to everybody, so everyone will buy something and the money will go to the Humane Society,” she said. “You’ll be able to get handmade ceramic coffee cups for $3 and up. We want people to come and buy stuff!”

The gallery, which is located at 114 Kamehameha Avenue near Cronies Bar & Grill, will have extended hours that day from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Hickey says she was motivated to do this benefit because of her love for animals. “We adopt most of our animals from the Humane Society, and I’ve always wanted to do something for them,” she said. “Also, my pottery students are really excited about making some of the items and selling them for a good cause.”

Everything for sale in the gallery has been created by a Big Island artist. “We have fine art, cards, hand-made bags, jewelry, prints and ceramics.  “Every artist in the gallery is giving a percentage of their sales that day toward the Humane Society’s cause, and High Fire Hawaii will also match the percentage,” she said.

Spot The Space Station Over Your Backyard With New NASA Service

On the 12th anniversary of crews continuously living and working aboard the International Space Station, NASA announced Friday a new service to help people see the orbiting laboratory when it passes overhead. “Spot the Station” will send an email or text message to those who sign up for the service a few hours before they will be able to see the space station.

“It’s really remarkable to see the space station fly overhead and to realize humans built an orbital complex that can be spotted from Earth by almost anyone looking up at just the right moment,” said William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for human exploration and operations. “We’re accomplishing science on the space station that is helping to improve life on Earth and paving the way for future exploration of deep space.”

When the space station is visible — typically at dawn and dusk — it is the brightest object in the night sky, other than the moon. On a clear night, the station is visible as a fast moving point of light, similar in size and brightness to the planet Venus. “Spot the Station” users will have the options to receive alerts about morning, evening or both types of sightings.

The International Space Station’s trajectory passes over more than 90 percent of Earth’s population. The service is designed to only notify users of passes that are high enough in the sky to be easily visible over trees, buildings and other objects on the horizon. NASA’s Johnson Space Center calculates the sighting information several times a week for more than 4,600 locations worldwide, all of which are available on “Spot the Station.”

November 2nd marked 12 years of continuous human habitation of the space station.

Call for Submissions – “She… On The Tip Of Her Tongue”

“She… On The Tip Of Her Tongue” is gearing up for a February 2013 Big island performance.  They invite bold, motivated female performance artists of all ages, cultures and creative mediums, to audition for the upcoming “SHE 2013”.

Submissions for “SHE 2013” are open NOW and close Dec 7, 2012.  You may submit up to 3 ORIGINAL pieces (song, poem, dance, rant,etc)  They will be accepting 10 solo artists and 5-10 groups.

We will also host LIVE AUDITIONS at The Pahoa Museum on the following dates:

• Monday, November 26th 1-5pm
• Friday, November 30th 1-5pm
• Saturday, December 1st 1-5pm

All auditions must be stage-ready.  Live auditions will be videotaped for review. Selected performers will be notified by December 15th via phone and Facebook announcement.

SHE 2013 performers will be selected by a panel of past SHE participants.  Selected performers must commit to 4-6 mandatory meetings / rehearsals, including photoshoot(s), between Jan 1 and the performance, as well as dress rehearsal.  Email questions sheauditions2013@yahoo.com.
