11-30 UPDATE

A 65-year-old Pāhoa man died Thursday (November 29) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pāhoa.

Responding to a 3:34 p.m. call, Puna patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the 65-year-old man was operating a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling north on Route 130 when a 1999 Lexus multi-purpose vehicle being operated by a 66-year-old Pāhoa man failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn onto Leilani Avenue.

The motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet and was dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lexus was not injured. His wife, a 64-year-old woman, went to the Hilo Medical Center by private vehicle and was treated and released with minor injuries.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

The motorcycle operator was taken to Hilo Medical Center and officially pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.

The name of the motorcycle operator is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about the crash call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

This is the 37th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 19 at this time last year.

  1. I do sincerely apologize for just posting the accident as I saw the scene…I was caught up in the tragedy and was not thinking straight. However the family needs to know that I spoke to two witnesses that had just left Sanford’s Gravel only minutes before this tragedy occurred and were passed by Bo on his bike traveling in excess of 60 mph less than a half mile before that intersection where the incident occurred…my deepest condolences to the family…my prayers go out to you that are suffering the loss from your family.

    • Hi, I’m Bo’s nephew, and if you don’t mind, I’d like to ask you a few questions about his last minutes and thereafter.

  2. Isn’t this the guy who had the illegal squat house in the Kalapana lava flow and was doing illegal tours out there? Buddy-buddy with mayor’s family next door who all “forgot” the evictions we all got in 1992, preventing anyone from ever returning to “Kalapana Vacation Lots” and locking everyone out except of course the Mayor’s friends, mother, and this guy? (Thanks for the music at Pahoa though!)

    • You are a moron!! Maybe you should find out who “this guy” is before your so critical. I can assume from your writings that your contibution to society compared to Bo’s would equial the difference between a grain of sand and all the sand in the world. Toddle off to your beer and ball game.

  3. Yes, please remove the quote in yellow underneath the photo. There is no need for that and we are dealing with personal emotions here.

  4. I second my cousin Monica’s request; “too gross” to take pictures? How about tragic loss of life and respect for both the loved ones and the deceased? It would be appreciated by all if that quote was removed and let the facts stand for themselves without the description of the scene.

    Thank you.

  5. Would appreciate if the quote below the pic could be removed. We are still notifying family here.

    • Aloha Ms Randklev, our deepest condolences to your family. With the news going out on FaceBook, I assumed that family already knew. i learn from this morning’s police report that family had not yet been notified, I do hope my story has not added to your pain. Bo was a blessing to our community, and we are honored to have known him. ~Leilehua Yuen

      • Hi Ms. Yuen, We (family – I’m Bo’s nephew) did know already, and your article was helpful … it was the first one that came out. There was just that one line from Mr. Tucker’s source that some of my family objected to. Thanks for befriending and appreciating my Uncle.

  6. Aloha Damon, I linked to you in my story on Bo. Mahalo for the updates. I think we are still in shock. I’m assuming by now Sita has been told?

  7. Hwy 130 closed in both directions near this intersection and being diverted down Malama Street to reconnect to Leilani Avenue and proceed towards Lava Tree Park and back up to Hwy 130 to reconnect to the bypass road….plan accordingly.
