2012 Sea to Stars – Hardest Hill Climb in the World

Endurance cyclists have a new race to add to their bucket list with slots remaining for the 2012 Sea to Stars cycling expedition on Saturday, August 11 – the hardest hill climb in the world.

Those up for this epic life-changing challenge will depart from the oceanfront Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows and cycle to the Mauna Kea Visitors Center riding a distance of around 49 miles and climbing to 9,300 ft elevation.

Mauna Kea earns the distinction of the world’s tallest mountain from the sea floor (30,000 ft tall), higher than Mount Everest which stands at 29,000 ft.

With a steepness grade of more than 17 percent, Sea to Stars has been billed one of the toughest hill climbs in the world.

After the race, shuttle buses will transport cyclists back to the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows for an outdoor recovery after-party party and BBQ.

An awards ceremony will recognize the overall male and female winners and a range of prizes will be up for grabs.

21-Year-Old Dies in Moped Crash in Kona

A 21-year-old Kealakekua man died Thursday (August 2) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/moped crash at the intersection of Kealakehe Parkway and Ane Keahokalole Highway on Wednesday (August 1).

Responding to a 7:58 p.m. call Monday, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1995 Honda station wagon and traveling eastbound on Kealakehe Parkway when he rear-ended a moped at the intersection of Ane Keahokalole Highway. He swerved to the right and struck a fire hydrant, light pole and sign and then overturned.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt.

The victim and the moped operator were both taken to Kona Community Hospital. The moped operator was treated for his injuries and released. The operator of the station wagon was flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died Thursday at at 4:10 a.m.

Alcohol was a factor in this crash. At this time, it is unknown if speed was a factor.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide case [corrected type of case] and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 15 at this time last year.

Big Island Police Searching for Missing 15-Year-Old Boy

Big Island police are searching for a 15-year-old Hilo boy who was reported missing.

Cyrus Abiley

Cyrus Abiley was last seen in Hilo at 3 p.m. on May 4.

He is described as 5-foot-4, 135 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police ask than anyone with information about his whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

39-Year-Old Big Island Man Dies in Highway 11 Crash

A 39-year-old Kurtistown man died Thursday (August 2) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 11 midway between the 48- and 49-mile markers.

Responding to a 12:43 a.m. call, Kaʻu patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1987 Ford sedan and traveling southbound on Highway 11 when he ran off the left side of the road, lost control and overturned.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:19 a.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification.
