Big Island Police Continue to Use “NIXLE” Emergency Notifications to Pat Themselves on Their Backs

We have a police NIXLE notification system on this island that is supposed to be used for emergency notifications.

Unfortunately our Hawaii County Police Department uses it at times to promote themselves and send out notices that I would consider non-emergency related.

Here is a snippet of the most recent emergency Nixle notice I just received:

This year the annual Hilo Elks “World of Magic” performance themed “Circus Holly-Daze!” is a ridiculously wondrous Circus-Theater production boasting amazing skills, great characters, and guaranteed good, family fun for all ages!

Disillusioned Saint Slick, frantically tries to compete with the high-tech, commercialized, corporate toy industry by holding auditions for competent workshop employees.  To his dismay, he ends up with a bumbling, gaggle of elfin misfits who are skilled at everything OTHER than technology.  Their hilarious antics, mishaps and discoveries ultimately lead Saint Slick to a new appreciation for the simple things in life.

This entertaining Circus Arts Spectacular will ultimately impress you as much as it warms your heart.

Created by Annetta Lucero and Noah Moore of Terminal Circus, the performance will be on Sunday, December 16, starting 11 am, at Hilo’s historic Palace Theater.

New Shop Caters to Chefs and Culinary Enthusiast – The Spoon Shop

The Spoon Shop, a new specialty retailer catering to gourmet chefs and culinary enthusiasts, is open. Owned by residents Tracy Ackerman and Preston Crowl, The Spoon Shop is located in the former Gourmet Chefs Supply in the Old Industrial Area and stocks staples for creating and enjoying food.

The couple is busily stocking their shelves with a host of new items—like the award-winning Garlic Twist or must-haves like the Aerolatte milk frother. Some of the inventory is geared for perfecting culinary creations with ease; others are for holiday gift-giving, like the scientific, yet fun, Molecular Gastronomy Kit.

Find a selection of bar ware, fun napkins, aprons and Chef Wear, novelty items like Hawaiian-themed cutting boards and numerous gadgets and gizmos. The Spoon Shop will be expanding its grilling and barbecue selections for the outdoor chef.

DUI Checkpoints on the Big Island During Thanksgiving Holiday Season

Hawaiʻi Island police are informing motorists that officers will conduct DUI checkpoints islandwide in anticipation of the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. The effort is part of a national and statewide campaign called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

Sergeant Robert P. Pauole, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police are reminding motorists of the consequences of impaired driving and are enforcing Hawaiʻi County Ordinance No. 11-102. Also known as “Aliyah’s Law,” the ordinance permits officers to tow the vehicle of a driver who is stopped for impaired driving or driving after a license was suspended or revoked.

On Hawaiʻi Island, drunk driving was responsible for 23 of the 36 traffic deaths so far this year, which is more than 63 percent of the fatalities. “We need to get the message out that driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs kills,” Pauole said. “Always remember to have a designated, sober and licensed driver before you start drinking. If you can’t find one, don’t take a chance – take a taxi!”

Big Island Police Still Searching for Missing Puna Man

Big Island police are renewing their request for the public’s help in locating a 47-year-old Puna man who was reported missing.

Robert Allen Park is described as Hawaiian, about 5-foot-7, about 230 pounds with a stocky build, a bald head, brown eyes and a tan complexion. He may be in need of medical attention.

He was last seen around 2:30 p.m. on October 22 at a home on Pikake Street in Mountain View.

Police ask that anyone with information on his whereabouts contact Detective Norbert Serrao at 961-2383 or nserrao@co.hawaii.hi.us.

Big Island Police Asking for Help Identifying Woman Wanted for Fraudulent Use of Credit Card

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman wanted for fraudulent use of a credit card in Hilo. The card was used in at least two locations for charges totaling approximately $250.

The woman is described as local with a large build and possibly in her 50s. Police ask that anyone with information on her identity or whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Merchants are reminded to follow proper protocol when making credit card transactions and to be especially cautious when processing large purchases—especially if the credit card doesn’t swipe properly. When in doubt, check the credit card company.
