Los Angeles Lakers Chris Duhon Announced as Special Guest for 2013 Hawaii Island Hoops Summer Camp

Hawaii Island Hoops (HIH) is happy to announce and welcome Los Angeles Laker and former Duke Blue Devil Chris Duhon as our special guest at the HIH 13 College Prep Basketball Camp from June 3- 7, 2013 at the Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

Chris Duhon

Chris Duhon was a high school McDonald’s All-American and a four year starter for Duke University. In his freshmen year, he helped the Duke Blue Devils win the 2001 national championship, defeating Arizona in the finals. Duhon finished his career as Duke’s all-time leader in steals (300) and minutes played (4,813), and second in assists (819). He left as the only Atlantic Coast Conference player to record 1,200 points, 800 assists, 475 rebounds, 300 steals, and 125 three-point shots.

In June 2004, Chris Duhon was selected as the 38th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.  During his time with the New York Knicks, On November 29, 2008, in a game against Golden State Warriors, Duhon set a new Knicks single-game record with 22 assists in one game.  Now currently with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Duhon has been a solid contributor at the point guard position.

Hawaii Island Hoops 3rd Annual Senior All-Star Classic Announced

Hawaii Island Hoops announces today that it will host its 3rd Annual Senior All-Star Classic on Sunday May 5th at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

Hawaii Island Hoops

Hawaii Island Hoops looks to honor the top senior players in their final send off game as an all star.  The Girls game will begin at 1:00 pm with the Boys game to follow at 2:30 pm.  There will also be a halftime 3-point shootout and slam-dunk contest.

Hawaii Island Hoops – Skills Training Academy

Hawaii Island Hoops announces today they are starting registration for their Skills Training Academy on Saturday December 15th & Sunday December 16th from 9:00 am – Noon both days at the Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.  Open to boys and girls ages 8 – 17 from all skill levels.

The Skills Training Academy will teach daily workouts that include speed, agility, quickness, ball handling and shooting clinics.  These fundamental training workouts are specifically designed to provide you with the tools to improve your game and take it to another level.  Look forward to learning new techniques and getting better each day.

Hawaii Island Hoops Camp Announces 2012 Summer Camp Staff

The 2012 Hawaii Island Hoops Camp is just around the corner and today they announced the stellar coaching staff:

Andy Smith – Director – Hawaii Island Hoops

A former University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcan basketball standout and 2-year starter in the mid 90’s, Smith set several shooting records and finished a solid college career before graduation.

“I founded Hawaii Island Hoops because I know that our local student-athletes need help and outlets for them achieve their goals of getting a higher education and playing on the next level”.   “This is why we have specifically invited many college coaches and players to come out here and help our local players get better, and help find a college that is right for them”.

With the help of great coaching staffs throughout the years, Hawaii Island Hoops has helped place over 50 local student athletes in schools across the country.  “We are stoked to have another amazing coaching staff in 2012 and look forward to helping as many local student-athletes as we can”.

Andy Smith has been the Director of Hawaii Island Hoops since 2004 and teaches the shooting clinics at the College-Prep Basketball Camp.

Coach Brad Barbarick returns for his 4th consecutive year to help Andy Smith with Hawaii Island Hoops College Prep Camp.  Barbarick’s love for Hawaii Island Hoops runs deep as he has helped numerous campers achieve their goal of playing college basketball. “I truly love working Hawaii Island Hoops College Prep Camp, it is a great camp that truly has benefited lots of young men from Hawaii achieve their goals.”

Barbarick has worked and directed numerous basketball camps all over the United States in his 26 years as a college coach. Barbarick has worked and directed camps for such notable coaches as John Wooden, Pat Riley, George Karl, Jim Harrick and Don Nelson. Barbarick has run his own camp, Rip City Hoop Camp in Portland, Oregon for 21 years.

During his time at Concordia University Barbarick has produced numerous All-Americans and has been fortunate to have had several 20 win seasons and win two Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships

 

Henry Barrera – Nike SPARQ Training

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:andysmith:Desktop:2K12 Coaches:HenryBarerra2010.jpgNow entering his 3rd year with HIH, Henry Barrera is a dedicated teacher and coach of performance enhancement training.  He has spent the last 9 years developing programs for athletes in all sports, specializing in speed, agility, and quickness training.

Along with a Master’s degree in Education, he is Nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as a Nike SPARQ trainer.  Henry is currently the director of Speed-4-Sport and is a Sports Performance Specialist at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

As an athlete Henry was rewarded for his dedication and work ethic by being selected as a two-time NCCAA Division II All-American and was honored his senior season with the Pete Maravich National Basketball Player of the Year award in 99-2000.  Henry brings a high level of energy to every training session and looks forward to making an impact on the Island.

 

 

Craig McMillan – Santa Rosa Junior College – Head Coach

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:andysmith:Desktop:2K12 Coaches:Craig McMillian.jpgCraig McMillan is a teacher by his own example and by his own path in life.  Starting out playing his college ball at the University of Arizona, this gave him the passion to turn to coaching.  He first began coaching as an assistant at Marquette University from ’89-’94, then Assistant at University of Tennessee from ’94-’96.

From the college ranks he took his coaching talents oversees and coached professionally in Kuwait from ’96-’99 and Lebanon from ’99 – 2000.  Now, Coach Craig McMillan has been the head men’s basketball coach at Santa Rosa Junior College since 2000.

Glenn Farello just completed his 5th year as head coach at Paul VI HS and 14th overall.  He has coached over 50 players that have played College Basketball and 10 that have played Professional Basketball, including 2 NBA players, Delonte West (Mavericks) and Eddie Basden (Bulls).  His teams have made it to 11 Final Fours and have won the 2002 MD State Championship, the 2009 and 2012 VA Independent School State Championships, the 2012 City Title and PVI’s first ever WCAC Championship in 2012, going 21-0 in conference play.  The first team to have ever accomplish that feat in the conference.

Coach Farello has been named Coach of the Year 8 times, most recently the WCAC COY and Virginia State COY in 2012. In 2002, he was named Washington Post All Met Coach of the Year while at Eleanor Roosevelt.  9 times his teams have been ranked in the Top20 in DC Metro Area, including #1 in 2012.  The team finished ranked in Top 10 in the nation in 2012 going 35-3.  Coach Farello’s overall record stands at 267 – 128.

Tony Marcopulos enters his 25th year of collegiate coaching. Coach Marcopulos has just completed his 12th season at Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, CA.  Prior to Cabrillo, Coach Marcopulos was a Div. 1assistant coach for 12 seasons. He coached eleven at the University of the Pacific (88′-99′) and one at the University of Portland (99-00) before becoming the Head Coach at Cabrillo College in 2000.

While at Pacific Marcopulos helped lead the Tigers to two Big West Conference titles, a 1997 NCAA tournament birth and a 1998 NIT tournament birth. Marcopulos recruited and helped mentor Michael Olowokandi who became the 1st overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the LA Clippers.

Marcopulos took over the Cabrillo College Basketball program in 2000. At that time Cabrillo was among the worst of the 90+ Community College programs in the state. Quickly Marcopulos made the Seahawks competitive. The 2006-07 season saw the Seahawks win their first ever in school history Coast Conference South Division Championship (college was founded in 1959). Since that season the Seahawks have won three more in 08, 11 and 12. In Marcopulos’ 24 years as a collegiate coach over 90% of the student-athletes that finished their eligibility have graduated.

 

 

Alex Hartman – Nike Basketball – Professional Player

He was an NAIA All-American.  After a stellar college career, he then went to play professionally in Germany in 2007, Indonesia in 2008, where he won an Asian Championship and was named MVP.  Hartman then went to Romania in the Euro Balkan League in 2009.

Hartman traveled back to Indonesia for and ASEAN league and became the league’s leading scorer.  Hartman also played with Malaysia International Champions, MVP and league leading scorer in 2010-2011. 2011 International Basketball League Campion’s. 2011Canadian National Team, FIBA Americas.  Alex Hartman now works as a Nike basketball trainer and HoopDiaries.com owner.

 

Troy Stevenson – Santa Rosa Junior College – Assistant Coach

Stevenson is involved with recruiting, scouting, practice and game preparation. Additionally, Stevenson works with the guards in skill development drills and shooting. Stevenson is a former Bear Cub guard and recently received a Master’s Degree from Howard University (Rhetoric and Intercultural Communication) and the University of San Francisco (Counseling Psychology). Stevenson focuses on student-athlete academic performance, including junior college, NCAA, and NAIA eligibility.

 

Rob Engel – Hawaii Preparatory Academy – Former Euro Pro

Description: Data:Nimai 2012:IMG_3128.JPGFormer NAIA standout at Notre Dame College in New Hampshire, Rob still owns 5 national scoring records including most points in a game with 64. An All-American honorable mention, he finished his collegiate career with a 30.5 ppg and 12.4 rpg averages. He played professionally in Europe in such places as Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, and Italy. He was also Invited to play in the Fila NBA Summer Pro League in 1999 and 2000. Rob Engel is currently an assistant varsity girl’s coach at Hawaii Preparatory Academy here on the Big Island.

 

 

Bill Naylor –Former University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcan –  Head Coach at      King Kekaulike – Maui

Coach Naylor has just completed his 23rd year of coaching in the MIL (Maui Interscholastic League ). Naylor began his coaching career at St. Anthony in the late 80’s,  He moved on to Maui High School in 1996 where he won 6 league championships over a span of 10 years. He is currently coaching at King Kekaulike High School in beautiful upcountry Maui.

In 2012, during his second season, he took his King Kekaulike team to the state tournament for the first time in the schools 17-year history.  .

Naylor has been involved in basketball camps in the islands for the past 26 years.  He puts a huge emphasis on defense and again this year will be passing this on to our K2012 campers.  Naylor is a 1979 graduate of University of Hawaii Hilo, where he played 3 years for the Vulcans.

“The Big Island did a lot for me so it‘s my turn to give back to it. I love this game, so as long as I can walk and talk you will most likely find me somewhere near the court. I am looking forward to another great week of camp with an amazing staff.  “PMA is the only way”

Coach Naylor is married to his wife Lei for 31 years.  He has two daughters Lyndsay 29 and Kristen 26, both who spent their youth basketball days on the courts in Hilo and Kona.

Hawaii Island Hoops Fall Mini-Camp

Hawaii Island Hoops announces today they will be hosting a basketball training mini-camp on Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon at the Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

The training mini-camp is open to boys and girls ages 7 – 16 years old.  Hawaii Island Hoops is dedicated to teaching you how to train and workout the right way to help improve your overall basketball skills.

Starting with a Nike Sparq training clinic, which includes footwork, speed, agility and quickness stations.  Then into a passing/ball handling workout, ending with a high-intensity shooting workout.

Hawaii Island Hoops Looking for Dunkers at the 4th of July Dunk Tank

Our college-Prep basketball camp just finished another action packed week of great workouts, competitive games and top quality instruction.

Hawaii Island Hoops Dunk Tank

Now its time to unwind, and Hawaii Island Hoops is looking for Dunkers!!  This Monday, July 4th, Hawaii Island Hoops will be at Kona Commons (Sports Authority, Office Max, Petco Etc) and will be hosting the premier dunk tank from 3pm-5pm.

State Senator Josh Green and other local celebrities are offering themselves to be dunked at our tank.  Take a shot to cool them off for $1 a ball, with all proceeds benefitting Hawaii Island Hoops basketball programs.

We’ll have great photo ops, special guests, prizes and opportunities to dunk some of our Hawaii Island celebrities for good.  Come out and support Hawaii Island Hoops at Kona Commons, near Office Max on Monday July 4th from 3pm – 5pm.  Parade to follow.
