Schedule for Sunday’s Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest

Come cheer on your favorite contestants—local chefs and amateurs—at the inaugural Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest while enjoying a full lineup of culinary activities and entertainment. Time is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort’s Convention Center.

Public admission to all contest activities is $3 at the door (keiki 12-and-under are free) and benefit “The Heart of the Campus-Equip the Kitchens Campaign” for the future Hawaii Community College Palamanui campus. Free Roberts trolley will operate from Keauhou Shopping Center (pickup near Longs Drugs) from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Poke critiquing begins 10 a.m. with awards and public tasting at 12:30 p.m. Also on tap is a Hawai‘i Island Marketplace; a presentation titled “NELHA: a Catalyst for Sustainable Seafood Production” at 10:30 a.m., a Celebrity Poke Cook-off at 11:30 p.m. and a demo on “How to Make Poke by Sam Choy” at 1:30 p.m.

Headlining the entertainment lineup is The ROOKI’s: Don Kauli‘a on slack key, Russell Paio on guitar, Keola Grace on electric bass and Pomaika‘i Brown on a “frypan” steel guitar. The Hawaiian group’s name is an acronym for the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.

Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest is part of Keauhou Resort’s annual Kamehameha III celebration March 16-18 that commemorates the Keauhou-born king, Lani Kauikeaouli.

The contest is sponsored by Kamehameha Investment Corporation, Kamehameha Schools, the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort Spa, Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai, Aloha Shoyu and Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company.

North Kona to Receive Funds for School Construction Projects

Part of the more than $7.48 million of funds released by Governor Neil Abercrombie to the state Department of Education (DOE) for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) will benefit schools in North Kona.

“The improvements along Mamalahoa Hwy in Holualoa will help to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and the whole community,” said Representative Denny Coffman (District 6 -North Kona, Keauhou, Kailua-Kona, Honokohau).  “The release of funding for special education is needed and appreciated.  I wanted to acknowledge and thank the governor for releasing this funding.”

Representative Cindy Evans (District 7 – North Kona, South Kohala) said that this release of CIP funds is “much needed because there is much growth in the area,” and stated that “we’re in discussion with the Department of Education to build a new Elementary School in North Kona.”

• $1,000,000 – Special education renovations at various schools statewide – Special education portable classrooms at Pa’ia and Makakilo Elementary Schools, and trailer classrooms at Kihei Elementary School, Waipahu Intermediate School, and Kealakehe High School, as funding permits.
• $280,000 – Holualoa Elementary School, Hawai’i Island – Design for a pedestrian buffer to ensure the safety of students and staff on campus.

Big Island Police Investigating Puna Shooting

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are investigating a reported shooting that occurred yesterday (March 13, 2012) in Puna.

On March 13, 2012 at about 1:34 pm, Puna patrol officers responded to the Hawaiian Acres subdivision after receiving a report that a 47 year-old Volcano man reported that while he and his family were driving on Road 10, he heard what sounded like a gunshot and something impacting his vehicle. He discovered that a window on his American made van was shattered and he immediately drove away and called police.

Patrol officers contacted the driver and discovered that there were 5 additional occupants in the van however none of them sustained any physical injuries. Officers canvassed the area and located and arrested a 68 year-old Hilo man and a 47 year-old Kurtistown man near the scene.

Detectives have recovered the van as part of the investigation.

Upon conferral with prosecutors, detectives released the 47 year-old Kurtistown man last night pending investigation. The 68 year-old Hilo man remains in police custody while detectives continue the investigation, which is currently classified as first degree reckless endangering.

Would you allow your kids to swim in this death trap? This pool is connected to the open ocean by a short underwater tunnel. Works pretty much like a toilet flushing. As the wave comes in the pool fills up. When receding, the pool empties. You can imagine what happens when you’re sucked out the tunnel!!!! Many people have drowned here!
