Legislative Massage Day at the Hawaii State Capitol

Must be nice to be a Hawaii State Representative or Senator at times!

Recently there was a “Massage Day” so to speak at the capitol.  The event was the 17th Annual Legislative Massage Awareness Day at the Capitol.

At least the money raised on this day went to a good cause… the Hawaii Food Bank.

Congressional Candidate Bob Marx Receives Endorsement from Hawaiian Homestead Group

Second Congressional Candidate Bob Marx is honored by endorsement from Hawaiian Homestead group.

Edwin Miranda and Michael Johns Endorse Bob Marx for Congress

At a press conference on Earth Day in Hilo, HI, Bob Marx today accepted the endorsement of two prominent members of the Hawaiian Homestead group, Edwin Miranda and Michael Johns. Speaking on behalf of thousands of friends and Homesteaders, Miranda stated: “We need a strong neighbor island candidate to represent the neighbor island issues.” Miranda continued, “He’s a good friend; known him for the past four years—he’s kind of a funny guy, but a great listener.”

Edwin LP “Ed” Miranda currently holds a gubernatorial appointment and serves on the Hawai‘i Island Burials Council. Mr. Miranda  is  a  graduate  of  Castle  High  School, and received  his  Bachelor  of  Science  in General Agriculture from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1988. He has also worked extensively for the USDA Soil Conservation Service on the islands of Maui and Molokai. “Eddie” is also a Navy Submarine veteran. Mr. Miranda’s testimony stated: “His extensive people skills in his years of  working in the Hawaiian community will surely serve as an asset.” Marx said he was “thrilled to have Mr. Miranda on board.”

As an attorney in Hilo, Marx has represented thousands of people over the past 32 years. The diversity of the clients Mr. Marx has is not dissimilar to the population of Hawai‘i as a whole. Marx has performed many cases pro bono (free of charge), on a wide range of legal issues, including helping women out of abusive relationships and on water rights and sewage issues in the Puna area.

Michael John, also of the Keaukaha Homestead group, spoke to Bob’s excellent record of public service, including pro bono work he had done for the people in Keaukaha. Mr. John talked about the issues that Bob had volunteered his services for, noting that: “Bob is the first ever to stand up and address Hawaiian issues with us, be it the water issue, homesteading, sewage. We’ve had these problems that have been in existence for many, many years. Bob–has just come out and volunteered his services to help us.”

“I’m behind Bob also, and everyone else I know are behind Bob…” Mr. John said. “I know they’ll like Bob. He’s the first–first ever to come forward with that help. And I thank you very much, Bob.”

“I really want to thank these friends, and brothers of mine. I want you to know that my door will always be open,” Marx humbly stated. “Even when I am elected [to] Congress I do not intend to stop listening…and to help all people of Hawai‘i improve their conditions.”

Video From the Accident that Claimed 77-Year-Old Woman’s Life the Other Day

4/23/12 UPDATE: An autopsy conducted Monday (April 23) revealed that 77-year-old Alehandra Lauro of Kailua-Kona died from a medical condition and not from a four-vehicle collision April 19 at the intersection of Route 190 and Hinalani Street in Kailua-Kona.

As a result, police have reduced the number of traffic fatalities to date this year from 12 to 11.

On Friday I posted about a 77-Year-Old woman who was killed in a car accident in Kona.

…Responding to a 2:58 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the woman was operating a 2011 Hyundai multi-purpose vehicle and traveling south on Route 190 when she rear-ended a 2006 Toyota four-door sedan being operated by a 34-year-old Waikoloa man.

The Hyundai continued south and sideswiped a 1999 Jeep multi-purpose vehicle traveling north which was being operated by a 42-year-old woman from Kailua-Kona.

Debris from the crash also damaged a 1998 Mazda pick-up truck also traveling north and being operated by a 51-year-old Kailua-Kona man.

The Hyundai continued south on Route 190, struck a stop sign at the intersection of Route 180, ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned in the parking lot of an old nursery which is just south of the Route 190 and Route 180 intersection.

The Hyundai then caught on fire and the driver was burned in the vehicle.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured…

Well here is a video that was posted on YouTube that is apparently the aftermath of the accident.

WARNING… Their is GRAPHIC LANGUAGE and it’s a pretty graphic video.

This is what the poster of the video said about what they witnessed:

“I believe woman driver had heart attack lost control hit about 3 cars before driving up over a wall and caught in fire.”

Five County Pools Receiving Safety Improvements

Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, Pāhala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is replacing all of the drain covers at each facility with newer, safer versions that meet mandated federal standards to address potential entrapment issues.

The following lists the tentative start date for each pool to be closed:

  • April 21 – NAS Pool in Hilo (961-8697)
  • April 22 or 23 – Kawamoto Pool (961-8698)
  • April 28 – Pāhala Pool (928-8177)
  • May 4 – Kona Pool at Konawaena High School (323-3252)
  • May 21 – Kona Community Aquatic Center Pool (KCAC) (327-3500)

Due to the scope and nature of the work involved, it cannot be predicted when each upgrade will be completed. Please contact pool staff at the respective facilities (telephone numbers provided above) for updates on the work progress and the reopening dates.

New drain covers have already been installed at both the Laupāhoehoe and Kohala pools, while similar work at the Pāhoa Community Aquatic Center will be scheduled at a later date.

The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks the public for its patience and understanding while these important modifications are being made to ensure swimmers’ safety.
