11-30 UPDATE

A 65-year-old Pāhoa man died Thursday (November 29) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pāhoa.

Responding to a 3:34 p.m. call, Puna patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the 65-year-old man was operating a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling north on Route 130 when a 1999 Lexus multi-purpose vehicle being operated by a 66-year-old Pāhoa man failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn onto Leilani Avenue.

The motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet and was dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lexus was not injured. His wife, a 64-year-old woman, went to the Hilo Medical Center by private vehicle and was treated and released with minor injuries.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

The motorcycle operator was taken to Hilo Medical Center and officially pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.

The name of the motorcycle operator is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about the crash call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

This is the 37th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 19 at this time last year.

“Bo has quite a reputation as a musician and as a showman in Hawaii and across the world, it is going to be quite a night of music and fun at Volcano Art Center as we celebrate Bob Dylan’s 70th Birthday. Do not forget to pull out your denim for this gig as Volcano is gonna be rocking.” stated Concerts and Performances Coordinator David Wallerstein.

Bo Lozoff has been intermittently writing and performing his songs for almost forty years in the background of his career as director of Human Kindness Foundation. Three of the songs on Bo’s 2004 CD, “Whatever It Takes,” won awards in the Billboard World Song Contest of 2004, and two others won awards from the NC Songwriter’s Coop Competition for 2004. His 2006 release, “Eyes So Soft,” is a powerful live performance of songs written during his life on the road, speaking and performing across the country. The reviews and awards are already coming in for cuts from this new album, including one of his tunes being selected for a compilation CD and another being named a finalist in the international “We Are Listening” songwriting contest.

Bo’s unique work with prisoners around the world has drawn fans as diverse as the Dalai Lama, Mister Rogers, and Outlaw Biker Magazine. Bo’s first book, “We’re All Doing Time,” has been hailed by Village Voice as “one of the ten books everyone in the world should read.” Utne Reader named Bo “one of America’s 100 spiritual visionaries.”
Bo plays both solo performances — voice, guitar and harmonicas — and is sometimes joined by friends on guitar, violin, fiddle, keyboards, or vocals so you never know what fun and excitement is going to happen onstage at a Bo Lozoff concert.
Tickets are $15.00 and 10% off for members of Volcano Art Center. Please call David Wallerstein at 808-967-8222 for tickets or visit the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus. Visit http://www.volcanoartcenter.org for information and to purchase tickets online. Tickets are also available the evening of the performance 1 hour before scheduled concert time at theater Box Office.

Pahoa’s Toys For Tots Benefit Coming Up

Media Release:

It’s that time of the year again, and organizing the Pahoa Toys For Tots is well under way. This year it will take the form of a full-on Rock N Roll dance and pupu buffet at Akebono Theater on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Musicians donating their performances include Dave Seawater’s IBIS, Bo Lozoff, Kaliko Guyz, and Dan Nixx as Elvis, with Penney Madamba serving as emcee. M J Svoboda and Maavae will be cooking up a storm to create a spread similar to the one they did for the Obama Inaugural Ball a coupla years back.

A silent auction will feature artworks from StoneFace Hawaii, Patti Pease Johnson, Charles Christian Hansen, Nelson and Kainoa Makua, Willie K and others, goodies from Big Island Candies, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Big Island Toyota as well as lots of R&R memorabilia and more. Silent auctions are great venues for getting some really nice holiday gifts at a fraction of their retail value!

Since it is a T4T benefit, admission is a $20 ticket OR a NEW, UNwrapped toy or child’s gift. Luquin’s will be manning the bar, so the event is only open to those 21 years and older. Of course, you’ll have to pay for your own drinks. But the rest is included in the price of admission.

Please turn out to help celebrate the holidays and help the needy children in our community. It’s gonna be rougher this year than last as many people’s reserves are no more!

And anyone willing to donate a nice item to the silent auction should please call Frankie Stapleton at 965-8945. Since T4T is a non-profit, tax deductions are applicable for those donating to the cause!
