County Moving Forward With New $5.5 Million Pahoa Community Park

The Department of Parks & Recreation is moving forward with planning a new $5.5 million community park on a 56 acre parcel in Pāhoa town. On Jan. 18, members of the Puna community gathered at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility to talk story about the park, which will be adjacent to the Neighborhood Facility and Pāhoa Community Aquatic Center, right in the heart of Pāhoa.

Councilman Fred Blas, Parks & Recreation Director Bob Fitzgerald, and Deputy Director Clayton Honma discussed the plans thus far, and opened up the floor to find out what the Puna community would like in the park.

Suggestions ranged from a perimeter trail with room for wheelchairs and bikes, to a home field for the Puna Panthers football team, to a large gathering place to hold parties, to a disc golf course, to a venue for performing arts.

“This was just the first of more community meetings to come,” said Clayton Honma, deputy director of Parks & Recreation. “We will engage the community all through the master planning process to make sure Puna gets a great park.”

Parks are great ways to maintain open space and provide gathering places for the community, Mayor Kenoi said. And as the father of three children engaged in team sports, he understands the importance of parks for youth athletics. The lessons taught by achieving goals through perseverance, hard work, and collaboration as taught on the field are priceless throughout life.

“Parks are vital to safe and healthy communities,” Mayor Kenoi said. “We look forward to completing this pu‘uhonua, this safe place for the families of Puna to get away from negative influences and engage in positive activities.”

Pahoa Village Disc Golf Course First Public Course to be Approved in the State of Hawaii

Pahoa Village Disc Golf Course is the first “public” DG Course to be approved in the State of Hawaii.  Funding has been approved! Pledges and Commitments have been made! Surveying has begun! Sponsors are being gathered!

Perched on a beautiful property overlooking rustic and historic Pahoa Village, the freshly approved “Pahoa Village Disc Golf Course” has tremendous promise to be a premier location for holding World Class events.

One of the few par 3's for the Pros. Plans are to have par3 t-boxes throughout course for those just beginning in the game, or for those wanting to play a shorter more traditional DG course

Plans for multiple tee-pads and pin placements to accommodate all skill levels, along with extended par ranges in the 60’s to 70’s, in a suitably demographical area, should help to build a solid future for the Sport in Hawaii.

Pahoa Village, located in the Puna District on the Big Island of Hawaii, has a very unique and Free Spirited character….and is still very influenced by “Old Hawaii” and Traditional ways. Pahoa’s unique Spirit stems from a mix of Asian and Western influence during the early times of Ohia (tree) harvesting for railroad ties in 1800’s, Sugar Plantations in the early to mid 1900’s, and the more recent liberal Surfer, Rainbow and Eco influences of the last 50yrs. Because Pahoa and Puna is projected to grow over the next 10yrs at a faster pace than any other area in the State, improvements to infrastructure are a current focus.

The Park is in a “prime” location, providing the Community an Activities and Senior Center, Youth Facilities and PlayScape, Baseball Fields, Basketball Court, Olympic Pool and Showers, Concrete Skate Park(with more expansion soon!)…..and now the State’s very first public Disc Golf Course!!

Hawaii Castaways Disc Club – Big Island Open This Weekend at Mackenzie Park

Mackenzie State Park – January 23, 24 & 25, 2009

You are invited to Hawai’i for the 2009 Big Island Open starting on Friday January 23, 2009. with Afternoon Doubles to start at 2:00 PM. Last year we had a great turn out. This year we are expecting for it to be even bigger. So register early.

Friday Afternoon Late registration and 18 hole Doubles Round at beautiful Mackenzie State Park on the Puna Coast. Camping is available at MacKenzie State Park.
Friday Evening Party featuring catered food and drink with The Dave Seawater Band performing.

Saturday morning Players Meeting at 8AM sharp. Two 18 hole rounds Saturday the 24th at Mackenzie State Park. Catered Breakfast and Sandwich Lunch are available. Entertainment and catered dinner to follow second round.

Sunday morning Players Meeting at 8AM. 27 holes at Mackenzie State Park. Light breakfast and lunch then Pizza, Mehana beverage, fun games and awards ceremonies.

Pro open all divisions: $50.00
Amateur all divisions: $35.00
Non PDGA players add $10.00

Late Registration: $10.00 for registrations received after January 12th, 2009. Note: All late registration fees will not be added to the Pro purse. It will go to HCDC.
