Art Sale to Benefit Hawaii Island Humane Society

On Saturday, November 24, 2012, High Fire Hawaii, the art gallery & studio at 114 Kamehameha Avenue on Hilo’s Bayfront, is having a one-day sale on its gallery prints, paintings, jewelry and ceramics, and all sales will benefit the Hawaii Island Humane Society. Representatives from the HIHS will be conducting on-site pet adoptions.

Deals include everything from ceramic studio seconds, some student ceramics – both functional and sculptural items – to gallery prints, paintings and jewelry. There will also be specially created animal- and Christmas-themed items. “We’ll have things like pet bowls for food and water, ceramic Christmas ornaments that are animal-related, like bones, and also Hawaiian-themed ones, like palm trees and pineapples, to hang on the tree,” said gallery co-owner Shannon Hickey.

“We’re hoping we have something to appeal to everybody, so everyone will buy something and the money will go to the Humane Society,” she said. “You’ll be able to get handmade ceramic coffee cups for $3 and up. We want people to come and buy stuff!”

The gallery, which is located at 114 Kamehameha Avenue near Cronies Bar & Grill, will have extended hours that day from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Hickey says she was motivated to do this benefit because of her love for animals. “We adopt most of our animals from the Humane Society, and I’ve always wanted to do something for them,” she said. “Also, my pottery students are really excited about making some of the items and selling them for a good cause.”

Everything for sale in the gallery has been created by a Big Island artist. “We have fine art, cards, hand-made bags, jewelry, prints and ceramics.  “Every artist in the gallery is giving a percentage of their sales that day toward the Humane Society’s cause, and High Fire Hawaii will also match the percentage,” she said.

Free Art Demonstration With Hilo Artist Jacob Medina

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, High Fire Hawaii, the art gallery & studio at 114 Kamehameha Avenue on Hilo’s Bayfront, is having a Second Saturday Art Demonstration with Hilo artist Jacob Medina.

Medina studied painting at University of Hawaii, Hilo and received a BA in 2007.  His work has been shown in several juried exhibitions, including the 2011 Honolulu Printmakers 83^rd Annual Exhibit at the Academy Art Center and the Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2009 and 2011 at Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Jacob will be in front of the gallery from 11:00am to 3:00pm working on some of his latest pieces. High Fire Hawaii is offering 10% off on Jacob’s work that day. Drop by and check it out!

On Saturday, April 14, 2012, High Fire Hawaii, the art gallery & studio at 114 Kamehameha Avenue on Hilo’s Bayfront, is hosting free art demonstrations to celebrate their 4th anniversary. High Fire Hawaii is also hosting a benefit plant sale for Let’s Grow Hilo along with their one-day anniversary sale on selected gallery prints, paintings, jewelry and ceramics.

Free demonstrations will include Patti Pease Johnson painting on silk and wheel thrown pottery by Shannon Hickey. Demonstrations will begin after the conclusion of the Merrie Monarch Parade. The gallery, which is located at 114 Kamehameha Avenue near Cronies Bar & Grill, will have extended hours that day from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

All anniversary sale items are the work of Big Island artists. The gallery offers paintings, prints, ceramics, and jewelry. The adjacent studio offers classes for all ages in ceramics, drawing and painting.

Get High! Well Get Artistic at High Fire Hawaii

A new session of art and pottery classes are coming up at High Fire Hawaii, the art gallery and studio at 114 Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo. Registration is now open.

The Beginning Drawing, Watercolor and four Ceramics classes are four- to six-week classes that meet once a week, and start dates are spread throughout February.

Shannon Hickey, co-owner of High Fire Hawaii, teaches the ceramics classes. Beginning Drawing is taught by Jacob Medina, and Cate Courtot teaches Watercolor Lessons.   “Introductory Wheel Throwing” starts February 19, 2010 and runs for 6 Friday evenings (through March 26).  It’s from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  It teaches wheel throwing fundamentals such as centering, throwing and trimming functional forms on the potter’s wheel. Projects may include bowls, cups and plates. Tuition is $200 and includes six class sessions, 25 lbs. of clay (includes glaze and firing), and access to scheduled open studio time.

“Introductory Handbuilding” class runs four Saturday mornings, February 6 – 27, from 9 – 11:30 a.m. It teaches pinch, coil and slab techniques and is recommended for individuals with no clay experience. The $145 tuition includes four class sessions, 12 pounds of clay (includes glaze and firing) and access to scheduled open studio time.

“Introductory Sampler Pottery” class runs from 3 – 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons from February 17 through March 24. It provides an overview of basics, such as handbuilding and an introduction to the potter’s wheel. Tuition is $200 and includes six class sessions, 25 pounds of clay (includes glaze and firing), and access to scheduled open studio time.

“Advanced Pottery” is Independent Study for the advance potter, and is open to three wheel and three handbuilding students who have taken at least two High Fire Hawaii classes or have the instructor’s permission. Session 1 runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings from January 20 through February 24. Session 2 is from March 3 – April 7, same times. The class costs $135 and includes six class sessions and access to scheduled open studio time. Clay may be purchased from High Fire Hawaii.

“Beginning Drawing” will meet on Tuesdays, February 9 through March 2, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This class focuses on basic techniques including contour edges, negative space, sighting proportion, perspective and rendering form. It costs $75 and is taught by Jacob Medina.

“Beginning Watercolor” focuses on the basic techniques of watercolor painting. It runs on six Thursday evenings, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. February 18 through March 25. It is taught by Cate Courtot and tuition is $125.   High Fire Hawaii is a gallery and studio featuring paintings, prints, ceramics and jewelry created by Big Island artists. “Many are emerging artists, and some are long-term, established artists,” says co-owner Steven Lang.

The gallery and studio, which recently relocated to its Kamehameha Avenue location near Sig Zane Designs, will also be hosting special art exhibits, and the gallery/studio owners are open to suggestions regarding what classes they offer. “If there’s a certain type of art class people would like to take, they should let us know,” says Lang.   Contact High Fire Hawaii at 935-8380 to register or with any questions, or see the website at HighFireHawaii.com.
