You won’t ever see a negative article about the Superferry in the Honolulu Advertiser because the Honolulu Advertiser get’s big money for placing ads in its paper for the Superferry.
Point in case, earlier today, blogger Larry Geller linked the connection to the military with the Superferry, yet in the Advertisers breaking news they made no mention of the military connection despite quoting from the same newspaper article Larry did.

Keahi Pelayo made a recent comment on my blog about Traffic Fatalities Decreasing here on the Big Island and I didn’t even think about how true the statement really is:
“Maybe it is the cost of fuel, higher prices, less driving, fewer fatalities.”
I’ve read other statistics nationwide that did mention something similar, I can’t find it now.
I’ve gotten to know Paul Ogata through the internet fairly well over the last few years. RICHMOND, Va. – The federal government is chipping in nearly $30 million for 15 passenger rail projects across the country as Americans continue to drive less and take the train more, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Tuesday.
Peters announced the funding Tuesday at the downtown Richmond Amtrak station, one of the sites that will benefit. The projects are aimed at boosting intercity rail capacity and on-time performance.
Also benefiting are two projects each in Vermont, Wisconsin and Illinois; and one each in Arizona, California, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio and Washington state…
I blogged on August 16th about the new superferry being built in Alabama and casually joked that it would be easier for the Strikers to board and un-board. I also blogged about how Saddle Road was getting a new road just so that the Strykers could get to the Superferry here.
Well the confirmation has been made, at least in my mind, that this will primarily end up catering to the Military. (Hat tip to Larry Geller)

The Hawaii Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying whoever was responsible for a theft at Wong Stadium on September 13.
The theft took place during a varsity football game between Hilo High School and Keaau High School.
Investigation by officers from the South Hilo district revealed that one or more unknown persons entered the home team locker room and removed several personal items belonging to members of the Hilo High School team. The combined value of the stolen items is estimated at $1,191.

Just noticed that they are already planning larger telescopes then the Thirty Meter Telescope planned here in Hawaii.
The European Organization for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is thinking even bigger. It is expecting to start building a 40-m telescope called the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) in three years’ time, and has a 60 to 100-m telescope known as the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL) in the pipeline.

University of Hawaii — National Renewable Marine Energy Center in Hawaii. The National Marine Renewable Energy Center in Hawaii will facilitate the development and implementation of commercial wave energy systems for use in Hawaii and elsewhere in the world, and to assist the private sector to move ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems beyond proof-of-concept to pre-commercialization, long-term testing.
I just noticed that a worldwide survey was conducted… unbeknown to many of us here on the islands I would assume because I never heard about the survey before today:
A worldwide survey to select the best locations for astronomy research has narrowed the number of potential sites to two: Cerro Armazones in Chile’s Atacama Desert and Mauna Kea on Hawai’i Island. Each of the candidate sites has conditions that are essential to astronomy: very clear skies, very stable atmospheric conditions above the mountaintop, and low humidity.

He was last seen at his home in the upper Waiakea Uka area at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26. He was wearing beige shorts, a white T-shirt and brown tennis shoes and was operating a gold 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 4-door sedan, license plate KTM-997.

Kalanihuia Forbes of Honokaa was last seen in Honokaa around 11 a.m. on Friday. He has a medical condition that may require medication.
Forbes is described as being Hawaiian-Mexican-Caucasian, 5-foot-11, about 120 pounds with brown eyes, shaved black hair, a goatee and various tattoos on his arms down to the knuckles. He was last seen wearing a black Harely-Davidson button-up collared shirt, black jeans and brown loafers.
They really need to fix the entrance to the Luquins/Akebono Driveway. I was fortunate enough to enter using a high lifted truck… but while I waited outside for my food, I kept hearing car after car scraping the concrete as they came in and out of Luquins.

The “Training of Leaders” series of workshops equips people with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that help them accomplish their own goals to make life better for their families and communities.
This training is led by Jean Young and her dynamic team. This training was developed over the last 25 years in the UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.
This workshop is the first of three workshops and will take place at the Pahala Plantation House from Friday, October 3 at 9:00 a.m. till Sunday, October 5 at 6 p.m.
