Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 22-year-old Alaska man who was reported missing.

Boaz D. Johnson of Petersburg, Alaska, last spoke to his family at noon on May 27.

Johnson is also wanted for questioning in connection with the death of 25-year-old Brittany-Jane Royal, whose body was found May 28 in waters off Kalapana. Royal and Johnson had reportedly been camping together before her death, which is being investigated as a murder.

Johnson is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-6 or 5-foot-7, 145 pounds with short brown hair and blue eyes.

Drug Sniffer “Diesel” Retires

Media Release:

A police narcotics dog in West Hawai’i is headed for retirement at the end of the week.

Diesel, an 8-year-old narcotics detection canine, is seen with his teammate, Officer Edwin A. Buyten, who is displaying a bag of methamphetamines that Diesel sniffed out while it was hidden behind the engine and firewall of a meth distributor's vehicle.

Diesel is an 8-year-old yellow Labrador retriever who began his career at the Hawai’i Police Department in February 2007 as part of a certified narcotics detection team with Officer Edwin A. Buyten. Since that time, Diesel has been responsible for the following recoveries:

• Roughly 8 pounds of methamphetamine

• Roughly 20 pounds of marijuana

• Roughly 2 ounces of heroin

• Roughly 3 pounds of cocaine

• Roughly $250,000 in cash seizures

• Roughly 20 vehicle seizures

Diesel has also traveled throughout the state and assisted with outside investigations at the request of the FBI, the DEA, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Customs Services and the U.S. Secret Service.

The canine has an extremely passive disposition, which allowed him to participate in the D.A.R.E. program, local parades, educational demonstrations at the various Big Island schools and other community events.

Two of his most notable recoveries took place in Kona.

The first was an investigation at the Kona airport at which the Hawai’i Police Department, the FBI and the DEA received information about a large quantity of methamphetamines being transported from the mainland to Kona. Diesel conducted a screen on luggage and provided an alert on a bag. After the execution of a search warrant, investigators located more than 2.5 pounds of methamphetamines with a street value exceeding $150,000 dollars.

The second was when investigators from the Hawai’i Police Department requested the deployment of Diesel on a vehicle being operated by a known methamphetamine distributor. The woman was extremely cooperative with investigators and said numerous times that the officers could search her vehicle. Once deployed, Diesel immediately climbed underneath the vehicle and provided an alert to the firewall area. After the execution of a search warrant, officers located more than 5 ounces of methamphetamines hidden behind the engine and firewall. The drugs had a street value of $15,000 dollars.

Diesel plans to leave the Kona police station on Friday to live out his days in bliss in the Waimea area.

Big Island Police Seeking Pahala Man Involved in Domestics Involving Firearms

Big Island police are searching for a Ka’u man wanted in connection with a domestic confrontation on Sunday (July 3).

Nathan Cakin, 31, of Pāhala allegedly used a firearm to force his way into his girlfriend’s car in the driveway of their Pāhala home and then forced her to drive.

The woman stopped the car on Wood Valley Road and ran away. Cakin allegedly fired two shots and ordered her back into the car. Before she reached the car, the woman was able to escape into a vehicle driven by a passing tourist.

Cakin then allegedly got into the car his girlfriend had been driving, reached into the tourist’s car and dragged his girlfriend by the hair.

The tourist drove the victim to the Nā’ālehu police station.

Cakin is described as Filipino, 5-foot-9, about 250 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Puna Hitchhiker Attacks Wrong Driver… Ends Up Wounded in the Bushes

Big Island police are investigating an attempted robbery that reportedly occurred in the Puna District on Monday (July 4).

A 20-year-old Kea’au man reported that at about 1 a.m. Monday, he picked up a man in the area of highway 11 near the Shipman Industrial park entrance. He reported that after traveling south on Route 11 in a light green Honda, he turned into the Fern Acres subdivision in Puna and the male passenger attempted to carjack him. The victim said that while attempting to steal the vehicle, the suspect was injured and was last seen running into the bushes.

The victim was not injured during the incident. He described the suspect as a “hapa” or mixed-race man in his 20s, about 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded jacket over a white T-shirt and dark blue knee-length jeans shorts. He may have an injury to his left thigh area.

Police are investigating this incident as a first-degree attempted robbery and ask that anyone who may have knowledge as to the identity of this individual call Detective John Rodrigues Jr. at 961-2382.

Big Island Police Looking for Robber With Mole Above Left Lip

Big Island police are investigating a robbery that took place in Puna in April.

A 32-year-old Pāhoa woman reported that an unidentified man took her purse while she was at the Ainaloa Community Center at 11 p.m. on April 2. He then fled in an unidentified car.

The man is described as being in his 20s, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds with a large mole above his left lip. He was wearing a dark blue knit cap that had a Nike symbol.

Big Island police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two horses in the Hakalau area of East Hawai’i.

The caretaker of a property off Chin Chuck Road across from Veterans Park discovered the decomposing body of a horse entwined in barbed wire with what appeared to be a gunshot wound on June 8. The next day he found a second dead horse on the property with an apparent gunshot wound.

Kuuleinani Taketa was last seen at her Captain Cook home on March 15. She is described as being of Hawaiian-Chinese-Japanese descent, 5-feet tall, about 115 to 121 pounds with brown eyes and medium-length brown hair.

All Points Bulletin… Theft of Sushi Maker!

Big Island detectives are investigating the theft of a sushi maker during a February burglary in Hilo.

On February 20, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a business on the 700 block of Kīlauea Avenue and learned that a large maki sushi maker valued at $12,000 had been removed during a burglary sometime between February 19th and 20th.

The electric appliance weighs nearly 100 pounds, stands about 20 inches high and is about 22 inches long and about 14 inches wide. It is an Autec brand, model ASM830A and may not have the green rice hopper affixed to the top, as is depicted in the image above.

Hilo Men Busted for Puna Robbery… Suspects Brandished a Firearm

Big Island police have charged two Hilo men with various offenses following a reported robbery in Puna on Sunday (May 22).

Tuesday evening (May 24), detectives charged 28-year-old Paul Matthew Borowski and 30-year-old Keaka Daniel Kaneala Martin with first-degree robbery and alteration of identification marks prohibited (a firearms offense). Borowski was also charged with first-degree terroristic threatening and use of a firearm in commission of a separate felony.

Bail for Borowski was set at $22,500. Bail for Martin was set at $51,000. Both were held at the Hilo police cellblock pending their initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon (May 25).

The charges stemmed from an incident in which the victim, a 38-year-old Mountain View man, reported that on Sunday at about 7:45 p.m., while he was at a park near the Mountain View gym, he willingly met with both Martin and Borowski. During the interaction, the victim reported that one of the suspects brandished a firearm and forcibly removed his personal property before fleeing the park in a light-colored sports-utility vehicle. The victim did not sustain any injuries during the robbery.

On Monday (May 23) both Martin and Borowski were arrested in Hilo and were held in police custody while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section conducted further investigation. Detectives executed a search warrant on a residence in Hilo, where they recovered a firearm and other evidence.

Police Seeking Man Wanted for Sexual Assault of a Female Minor Near Pohoiki

Big Island police are requesting the public’s help in identifying and locating a man wanted for questioning in connection with a sexual assault of a female minor. The assault took place on March 12 between 6 and 6:25 p.m. in the warm pond near the Pohoiki Boat Ramp in the Puna District.

The man is described as Caucasian, 35-to-45 years old, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, 175 to 200 pounds with a medium build, brown eyes, shoulder-length curly reddish-brown hair, clean shaven with a tan complexion. He was last seen wearing red-and-white flower print board shorts and black slippers.

Detectives with the Juvenile Aid Section are continuing this investigation.

Picture Released of Man Wanted for Attempted Murder

Big Island police have acquired a current photo of 50-year-old Richard Broyles and ask for the public’s help in determining his location. Broyles is wanted for attempted murder.

On March 25 around 1:20 p.m., Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an assault at Glenwood Park off Route 11. Police and Fire Department Rescue personnel discovered that a 46-year-old Volcano man had sustained a stab wound to his chest. Rescue personnel took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he required surgery.

Broyles, who is also known as “Rick,” is described as Caucasian, about 6-foot-2 and 275 pounds. He was last seen leaving the scene in a light-colored 1999 Plymouth Voyager van, license plate KAC 934, and headed in the Volcano direction on Route 11.

Police caution the public not to approach Broyles, who is considered dangerous. Instead, police ask that anyone with information on his whereabouts call Detective Robert Almeida at 961-2386 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Police are Investigating TWO Shooting Incidents in Volcano Last Night

Big Island police are investigating two shooting incidents in Volcano late Tuesday night (December 21).

Responding to an 11 p.m. call of shots having been fired and possibly hitting a house in the Royal Hawaiian Estates subdivision, Puna patrol officers discovered that two houses on Mokuna Street appeared to have been hit with gunfire.

No one was injured from the shooting. Police have not determined a motive.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation, which is classified as first-degree reckless endangering.
