Update on the Puna Drug Lab Explosion

The 28-year-old Puna woman who was arrested in connection with a drug-related explosion has been released from police custody. Savannah Maloof of Keaʻau was released at noon on Tuesday (December 31) pending further investigation of possible drug charges.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old Keaʻau man injured in the butane honey oil lab explosion remains at Straub Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition with second-degree burns.

The blast also knocked out windows, melted plumbing fixtures and blew the doors off cabinets. At the scene, police found evidence of a lab used to manufacture butane honey oil, a marijuana byproduct.

Area I Vice Lieutenant Mark Farias said butane honey oil labs are becoming more prevalent on Hawaiʻi Island, as they are across the country.

“If you know about any butane honey oil labs on our island, we urge you to notify police immediately,” Farias said. “These labs are extremely volatile and can have tragic consequences for knowing participants as well as innocent victims.”

Kona Man Busted Again – Police Seeking Second Suspect

A Kona man has been charged AGAIN with several offenses following a shoplifting incident in Kona on Monday (December 30).

Shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Kona patrol officers responded to report of a shoplifting at a store on the 74-5000 block of Kamakaeha Avenue in Kailua-Kona. Two men who appeared to be together had reportedly stolen items from the store. One exited through a rear door with the stolen items and fled on foot into the brush. Another exited through a front door and got into a black Honda Civic.

Responding officers attempted to stop the car in the parking lot but the driver refused to stop. Police followed the car to the intersection of Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway, where the driver exited the Honda and ran away. Following a short foot pursuit, officers arrested 23-year-old Jesse Travis Ralston of Kailua-Kona.

Police determined that the car had fraudulent license plates and had been reported stolen from a home in Kailua View Estates between December 10 and December 11. Additionally, Ralston was in possession of crystal methamphetamine. He was taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section and Area II Vice Section continued the investigation. Detectives executed a search warrant on bags inside the car and found additional crystal meth inside, along with drug paraphernalia.

At 8 p.m. Tuesday (December 31), Ralston was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, failure to obey a police officer, reckless driving, resisting arrest, fraudulent use of a license plate, possessing drug paraphernalia, two counts of promoting a dangerous drug and three counts of violating terms of probation. His bail was set at $119,000. He remained in the cellblock pending his initial court appearance Thursday (January 2).

The other suspect was not located.

Hawaii Island’s Most Wanted Features Three Still Wanted

The most recent edition of the Crime Stoppers television program “Hawaii Island’s Most Wanted” highlights a 23-year-old man still wanted in a murder investigation, a man wanted for questioning about two thefts and a burglary, and an indentified man wanted in a Hilo robbery.

The television program also asks for help in locating a man wanted for questioning about two thefts and a burglary in Puna. Thomas J. Desimone is 43 years old and has no permanent address. He is described as 5-foot-8, 170 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair, a mustache and goatee.

A 43-year-old Hilo woman reported that between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on November 4, she was walking with a bicycle on Mililani Street between Piʻilani Street and Hualani Street when she was approached by a man who demanded money, threatened her and fled with cash. The victim was not injured in the encounter. The suspect is described as a local male between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11 with a muscular build, dark brown eyes, very short black hair and a tan complexion. Gun Threat Reported at UH Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect and vehicle wanted in connection with a reported threat incident Monday morning (December 9) at a college campus in Hilo.

At about 10:06 a.m. Monday, police received a report from 25-year-old male employee of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo that at about 9 a.m., while he was near the upper campus, he was accosted by a local male who allegedly brandished a firearm and pointed it at him before fleeing the area in a black Toyota pickup truck.

The victim left the campus and went home to Puna before calling police to report the threat. He was not injured in the incident.

The suspect was described as a local male in his 30s with a dark complexion and a neatly trimmed beard with long sideburns to his chin. He was wearing black sunglasses. The truck was described as a lifted black Toyota Tacoma with black rims and dark black tint and a white “NSPYR” sticker near the gas fill cover.

Police advise the public not to approaching the truck, as the operator may be armed and is considered dangerous.

Big Island Police Looking for Man that Ran Over His Girlfriend With Car in Domestic Dispute

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a domestic violence incident that was reported Monday night (December 9).

A 41-year-old Hilo woman reported that between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday, she was involved in an argument with her boyfriend, 35-year-old Justin Lee, at their Hilo home. As the argument escalated, he reportedly ran over her with a car and then fled on foot.

The victim was taken by private vehicle to Hilo Medical Center with serious injuries and then transferred to a Honolulu hospital for further treatment. Her condition remains unchanged.

Lee is described as a bald local male, 5-foot-8 with a heavy build, brown eyes and a tan complexion. He has a mole on the left side of his chin and numerous tattoos on the back of his head, neck and arms as well as large words tattooed where his eyebrows should be.

In addition, Lee has three outstanding warrants for his arrest, including a no-bail warrant.

UPDATE:

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested 35-year-old Justin Lee, who was wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident Monday night (December 9) in Hilo.

Lee turned himself in at the Hilo police station at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday (December 10).

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangering and is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continue the investigation.

He was also arrested and charged with bail jumping, contempt of court and violating terms of release.

Big Island Police Release Sketch of Suspect from October Robbery

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an attempted robbery that occurred in Hilo on October 31.

At about 8 p.m. on that date, police responded to the Waiākea Villas after receiving a report from a 49-year-old Hilo man that while walking in the complex toward his vehicle in the parking lot, he was accosted by a man who brandished a weapon and demanded money. After the victim refused the demand, the suspect fled the area. The victim was not injured in the robbery attempt.

The suspect is described as a local male in his late 20s, about 5-foot-10, about 200 pounds with a light mustache. He was wearing a black T-shirt, dark shorts and a cap embroidered with the words “BJ Penn.”

Aloha Damon can you help? My niece at UH Hilo a sophomore, was attacked in the girls restroom on campus at about 4:40pm. He was a tall 6 foot white guy and put a knife to her neck. He struggled trying to get her top off than dropped the pocket knife then she started punching his face and yelling and then he picked up the knife and ran out. She ran after him and saw him get into a Red Ford Expedition and speed off. When the police interviewed her, she thought her attacker looked like Ariel Jost that guy that was just busted. Maybe he has a brother? Will forward you the info from her mom *****, my niece flew back to Honolulu today to be near her parents for the next few days.

The incident occurred in the Geology building women’s bathroom at approx 4:45pm Tuesday 11/19, white male 6′ short curly blonde/brown hair followed her grabbed her, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her if she screamed. He dropped the knife when he was trying to remove her clothes then she started punching his face, he yelled, picked up the knife and ran out of the bathroom. Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon (November 5) at a fast-food restaurant in Hilo.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday, a man entered the Subway restaurant on Lanikaula Street just mauka of Kīlauea Avenue. He claimed he had a gun and demanded cash. After the female victim refused to give him money, the suspect fled on foot up Lanikaula Street. He may have gotten into a black Toyota four-door sedan on Kapiʻolani Street just off Lanikaula Street.

The suspect is described as Asian, 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-4, about 140 pounds with brown eyes. His hair color was obscured by a gray hooded sweatshirt and a hat. He was also wearing dark shorts, a black-and-white flannel shirt and dark rubber shoes.

State Sheriffs and Honolulu Police are searching for an escapee from Waiawa Correctional Facility (WCF). They were notified of Raphael Hernandez’s escape after he was confirmed missing during a headcount this morning. He was last seen at the 4 a.m. headcount.

Janette Marie Silva is wanted on two $10,000 warrants for felony drug offenses. She is also wanted for questioning in connection with a burglary investigation.

She is described as 5-foot-1, 170 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. She has no permanent address but frequents the Puʻuʻeo area of Hilo.

Police ask anyone with information on her whereabouts to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
